Fire can happen in an instant β but with the right steps, many home fires can be prevented. Your safety is our top priority, and weβre here to help you protect what matters most. Below are key fire safety tips every household should follow:
Stay in the kitchen while cooking. Unattended cooking is one of the leading causes of house fires.
Keep flammable items away from heat sources. This includes curtains, paper towels, and space heaters.
Avoid overloading outlets. Use power strips with surge protectors and unplug unused appliances.
Store matches and lighters out of children’s reach.
Install smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home.
Test your alarms once a month. Push the test button to make sure it works.
Replace batteries at least once a year, and replace the entire unit every 10 years.
Consider adding carbon monoxide detectors if your home uses fuel-burning appliances.
Know two ways out of every room. Make sure windows and doors open easily.
Keep exits clear of furniture and clutter.
Install escape ladders in multi-story homes.
Make a fire escape plan and practice it twice a year.
Pick a safe meeting spot outside the home (like a tree or mailbox).
Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
Never go back inside a burning building. Call 911 from a safe location.
